Defence Minister’s statement disputed by Rahul Gandhi, prompting swift clarification from military sources

In a swiftly unfolding controversy, the Indian Army has issued a clarification regarding the compensation paid to the family of Agniveer Ajay Kumar, contradicting claims made by Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. The issue erupted after Gandhi alleged that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh misled Parliament about the financial support provided to Agniveer Ajay Kumar’s family.

According to a late-night statement by the Army on Wednesday, Agniveer Ajay Kumar’s family has indeed received ₹ 98.39 lakh as part of the compensation package. The statement came in response to social media posts and Rahul Gandhi’s video message, where he reiterated that the family had not received the promised ₹ 1 crore, as stated by Rajnath Singh.

“The last rites were conducted with full military honours. The family has been disbursed ₹ 98.39 lakhs, with additional ex-gratia and benefits amounting to approximately ₹ 67 lakhs pending final settlement after police verification,” the Army clarified.

Rajnath Singh’s office echoed the Army’s clarification, emphasizing the government’s commitment to supporting the families of Agniveer personnel who sacrifice their lives in service.

Sources indicated that the ₹ 98 lakh payment was processed by the end of June, underscoring the timeline of disbursement contrary to the allegations.
