Starring alongside Kerry Fox, Rylance portrayed Jay in Intimacy, a film centered around a failed London musician engaged in intense sexual encounters with a woman. The controversial aspect of the movie includes an unsimulated oral sex scene between Rylance and Fox, pushing boundaries and stirring debates about its artistic merit.
Addressing a fan’s inquiry about his choice to participate in the film, Rylance expressed that Intimacy was the most challenging job he had undertaken. He emphasized the story’s significance, tackling the difficulties people face in finding intimacy in a metropolis like London. However, Rylance regretfully acknowledged the subsequent painful experiences, both during the film’s making and the ensuing public scrutiny.
In a 2016 Q&A, Rylance admitted, “I found the making of the film and the subsequent publicity and personal attacks very, very painful.
