The West Belfast shooting leaves taxi driver in critical condition as police urge witnesses to come forward

A taxi driver is fighting for his life after being shot through his car window by two masked men in a brazen daylight attack in west Belfast. The shooting occurred around 10:30 am on Sunday in the Bell Steel Manor area of Dunmurry, leaving the community in shock.

The victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, was parked when the assailants approached and opened fire. He was rushed to hospital, where he remains in a critical but stable condition. Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) detectives have launched an urgent investigation, appealing for witnesses and any dash-cam or CCTV footage from the area.

“This was a reckless and brutal attack,” a PSNI spokesperson stated, urging anyone with information to come forward. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, but officers are exploring all possibilities.

Sinn Féin MLA Danny Baker condemned the incident, calling for an end to gun violence. “There is no justification for guns on our streets. This is a busy area, with families and children passing through daily,” he said.

The shooting has reignited concerns over organised crime and paramilitary activity in Northern Ireland. As police continue their inquiries, local residents remain on edge, fearing further violence in their community.

The attack has left the local taxi community shaken, with drivers expressing fear over their safety while working in the area. Some have called for increased police presence and better protection measures to prevent further violence against those providing essential services.

Meanwhile, authorities are examining whether the shooting was a targeted attack or linked to wider criminal activities. As the investigation unfolds, tensions remain high, and residents are hoping for swift justice to restore a sense of security in their neighbourhood.
