GM launches Cadillac-branded F1 team, plans to develop engines by 2026, challenging global rivals

General Motors (GM) has taken a significant step toward its Formula 1 ambitions with the establishment of GM Performance Power Units, a new engine-building company. This bold move aligns with the automotive giant’s plans to debut a Cadillac-branded F1 team in partnership with US group TWG Global in 2026.

The company has already begun testing prototype F1 engine technology at its motorsport technical centre in Charlotte, North Carolina. By 2026, GM plans to open a dedicated facility nearby, marking a pivotal moment in its journey to become a “full works” team capable of producing both F1 vehicles and power units by the end of the decade.

For its initial foray into the sport, Cadillac will rely on Ferrari customer engines, debuting in 2025. However, GM’s long-term vision is clear: to develop its own engines and establish itself as a dominant force in the sport. While no exact debut year for the GM F1 engine has been announced, the company’s determination is unmistakable.

Russ O’Blenes, a seasoned figure in motorsports propulsion, will lead the new engine company as CEO. His extensive expertise in high-performance engineering is expected to drive the development of Cadillac’s F1 engine programme. “This is a monumental opportunity for GM to redefine its legacy in motorsport,” O’Blenes said.

Dan Towriss, CEO of TWG Motorsports, expressed his excitement for the collaboration: “We’re delighted to welcome Russ to this pivotal role. His leadership, alongside team principal Graeme Lowdon, will set new standards of performance and innovation in the sport.”

The ambitious project underscores GM’s commitment to pushing boundaries in motorsport. By stepping into Formula 1, the world’s most prestigious racing series, GM aims to showcase its engineering prowess on a global stage. The introduction of Cadillac as the brand ambassador adds an extra layer of luxury and sophistication to the venture.

As the countdown to 2026 begins, GM’s move into Formula 1 signals a seismic shift in the motorsport landscape. Will the American automotive powerhouse rise to the challenge and rival established giants like Ferrari and Mercedes? Only time will tell.
