The actress who captivated audiences as Juliet in the 1968 Romeo and Juliet has died, leaving behind a legacy that extends beyond her iconic role.

Olivia Hussey, the celebrated actress best known for her portrayal of Juliet in the 1968 film Romeo and Juliet, has passed away at the age of 73. The Argentinian-born star, who moved to London at the age of seven, died surrounded by her loved ones on Friday, as confirmed by a statement on her Instagram.

Hussey’s role as Juliet in Franco Zeffirelli’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic brought her international fame when she was just 15. Her performance earned her a Golden Globe for Best New Star, cementing her place in film history. The film, which also starred Leonard Whiting as Romeo, was nominated for multiple Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.

Despite her early success, Hussey’s career was marred by a controversy surrounding the film’s nude scene. Decades later, she and Whiting sued Paramount Pictures for sexual abuse, claiming they were coerced into filming the controversial scene, despite previous assurances that they would not have to do so. Though a judge dismissed the case in 2023, Hussey’s bravery in speaking out highlighted her commitment to justice and the importance of protecting young actors.

Beyond Romeo and Juliet, Hussey’s career spanned diverse roles. In 1977, she reunited with Zeffirelli for the Jesus of Nazareth miniseries, portraying the Virgin Mary. She went on to appear in films such as Death on the Nile and Black Christmas, the latter earning her the title of a “scream queen” for her role in the early slasher genre. Hussey’s voice acting work also earned her recognition in video games, showcasing her versatility as an artist.

In 2015, Hussey and Whiting reunited once again for Social Suicide, a British film that reimagined the story of Romeo and Juliet in the social media age.

A statement from her family read: “As we grieve this immense loss, we also celebrate Olivia’s enduring impact on our lives and the industry.” Olivia Hussey’s legacy as an actress, activist, and cultural icon will forever be remembered.
