Whether he wins or loses, Tom Grennan commits to marking the 2024 Christmas Number 1 race with permanent ink.
Tom Grennan is proving his dedication to the Christmas Number 1 race with an unconventional promise: a commemorative tattoo, no matter the outcome.
The British singer-songwriter has entered the festive chart fray with his Amazon Original track It Can’t Be Christmas, vying for the coveted spot against iconic contenders like WHAM!’s Last Christmas and Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas Is You. Yet, Grennan’s commitment to the race extends far beyond music—straight to his skin.
Earlier this week, Grennan shared a video of himself beginning a tattoo reading, “Christmas No.1 2024 is…” inked on his right thigh. Speaking to Greg James on BBC Radio 1, he revealed how he plans to complete the piece after the results are announced.
“If I win, I’ll just get ‘me’ tattooed,” Grennan explained. “But if WHAM! takes the top spot, which they probably will, I’ll get George Michael’s face on my leg.” Displaying admiration for the late pop legend, Grennan added, “Honestly, I want George Michael’s face on my leg.”
The festive race has clearly been a highlight for the singer, who described the experience as thrilling. “Being part of the Christmas Number 1 race is really cool,” he said. “There’s so much excitement around it, and to contribute to that is so fun.”
Grennan also offered insight into the creation of his song, aiming to craft a track that evokes the spirit of pub singalongs. “I wanted a song where people in a pub with a beer could say, ‘That’s the one,’ and sing it together,” he shared.
The Official Christmas Number 1 race runs until midnight on Thursday, December 19. Fans can tune into BBC Radio 1 on Friday, December 20, at 4 PM for the Christmas Top 40 countdown, culminating in the announcement of the 2024 winner. The full Top 100 chart will be available on OfficialCharts.com from 5:45 PM.
Grennan’s tattoo journey—and the outcome of this year’s festive chart battle—will undoubtedly add a unique chapter to his career. Whether his leg ultimately bears his own triumph or a tribute to George Michael, his enthusiasm for the season’s musical magic is undeniable.
