The Pakistani government prioritises the safe return of its citizens after the fall of Assad’s regime in Syria

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has issued an urgent directive to ensure the safe evacuation of Pakistani nationals from Syria, following escalating tensions and the dramatic fall of President Bashar al-Assad’s government. The sudden power shift has created chaos in the war-torn country, prompting the Pakistani government to take immediate action to safeguard its citizens.

The directive was given on December 9, 2024, during a high-level meeting in Islamabad, where top officials discussed the evolving situation in Syria. PM Shehbaz emphasised that the lives and property of Pakistanis in Syria were of paramount importance. His instructions were clear: all available resources must be mobilised to facilitate the swift return of those wishing to leave.

This development follows a surprise rebel offensive that saw Assad’s 24-year rule abruptly end. As Syrian rebels declared victory, the international community was left stunned, and the situation in Syria grew increasingly unstable. The sudden upheaval has added urgency to Pakistan’s efforts to evacuate its citizens, with fears of further violence and instability.

PM Shehbaz’s instructions included the activation of an emergency plan, calling for a 24/7 crisis management system to assist Pakistanis seeking to return home. The Pakistan Embassy in Damascus has been instructed to set up an information desk and helpline to guide citizens through the evacuation process. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Crisis Management Unit has been tasked with coordinating efforts across Syria and neighbouring countries to ensure the safe passage of nationals.

Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, and Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Cheema attended the meeting, underscoring the seriousness of the situation. Special Assistant to the Prime Minister, Tariq Fatemi, also participated in the discussions, which focused on streamlining the evacuation procedures and coordinating with international partners.

Pakistan’s response is part of a broader effort to ensure the safety of its citizens in conflict zones. In addition to military and diplomatic measures, the government is providing practical support through its embassies in Syria and neighbouring nations. PM Shehbaz’s statement reflected the government’s commitment to ensuring that no Pakistani is left behind in this crisis.

The evacuation plan will involve the mobilisation of both diplomatic and logistical resources. The Pakistani authorities have assured citizens in Syria that every effort will be made to help them return safely, with the embassy teams working tirelessly to resolve any issues that may arise during the process.
