Commission for Air Quality Management implements 27-point Action Plan to combat pollution in the National Capital Region

As Delhi grapples with deteriorating air quality, the city’s daily Air Quality Index (AQI) has plummeted to a concerning 234, categorising it firmly within the ‘poor’ range. In response, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has activated Stage-I of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across the entire National Capital Region (NCR), effective from 8:00 AM on October 15.

The AQI scale ranges from 0 to over 500, with values below 50 considered ‘good’ and 51-100 as ‘satisfactory.’ The current reading of 234 indicates a significant environmental concern, as the ‘poor’ category spans from 201 to 300. This level of air pollution poses health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations, making it essential for local authorities to take immediate action.

In a statement, the CAQM emphasised that all relevant agencies must implement the actions outlined in Stage-I of GRAP with diligence. This initial stage focuses on reducing pollution levels through a 27-point action plan, which includes specific measures aimed at addressing the root causes of air quality deterioration.

Key actions under this plan involve rigorous enforcement of dust mitigation strategies during construction and demolition activities, ensuring that all construction sites adhere to environmental management standards. The CAQM also calls for effective management of construction and demolition waste, which contributes significantly to the air pollution crisis in the region.

In addition to construction-related measures, the plan mandates increased monitoring of industrial emissions and vehicular pollution, two major contributors to the worsening air quality in the NCR. Authorities will intensify their efforts to regulate emissions from factories and ensure compliance with pollution control measures.

Public awareness campaigns will also play a crucial role in the implementation of the 27-point action plan, as local agencies work to educate residents on the importance of reducing pollution and adopting environmentally friendly practices. Initiatives may include promoting public transport, encouraging the use of electric vehicles, and fostering community involvement in cleanliness drives.

As the air quality continues to decline, residents are advised to limit outdoor activities, particularly those involving physical exertion, and to use air purifiers when necessary. Vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions, should take extra precautions to protect their health during this period of heightened air pollution.

The activation of Stage-I of the GRAP reflects a growing urgency to address the air quality crisis in Delhi and its surrounding areas. As the government takes these proactive measures, stakeholders hope for a marked improvement in air quality in the coming weeks, allowing residents to breathe easier and fostering a healthier environment for all.
