Red Bull faces urgent challenge to tame Verstappen’s ‘monster’ car as Norris closes in on title

With only six races left in the season, Max Verstappen’s title lead is under threat from Lando Norris, who has reduced the gap to 52 points after a dominant win in Singapore.

As the 2024 Formula One season approaches its climax, Max Verstappen and Lando Norris are set for a thrilling showdown in the championship race. With just six races remaining, including two triple-header weekends, the pressure is mounting on Red Bull to resolve significant performance issues with their car, which Verstappen has described as a “monster.”

The next race, the US Grand Prix in Austin on October 20, follows an unusual four-week break that could play a critical role in the championship battle. While this hiatus does not involve a complete shutdown like the traditional summer break, teams will use the time to refine their cars for the intense schedule ahead.

Norris enters this interval buoyed by his recent victory in Singapore, where he finished 21 seconds ahead of Verstappen, narrowing the championship gap to 52 points. Despite the impressive feat, Norris remains aware that the title is still very much Verstappen’s to lose, noting that he needs to outscore the reigning champion by nearly nine points per race to take the crown.

The upcoming stretch of races will be vital for both contenders, with events set to take place in Austin, Mexico, Brazil, Las Vegas, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi. Developing a competitive car on the fly will be crucial, particularly for Red Bull, which has struggled to regain its dominant form after a series of mid-season upgrades that have affected the car’s balance.

Norris’s McLaren team has made notable improvements, particularly since introducing significant upgrades during the Miami GP. The car has outperformed Verstappen’s Red Bull in recent races, leading McLaren to cautiously consider further enhancements, including a new floor design. Team principal Andrea Stella emphasized the need for a careful approach, given the successful performance of their current package.

In contrast, Red Bull faces a pressing challenge. Verstappen has cited issues with the car’s handling, linking the performance dip to recent changes, particularly concerning the car’s floor. Christian Horner, Red Bull’s team principal, acknowledged the difficulties, describing the situation as a “vicious circle.” Despite this, Verstappen’s ability to secure a second-place finish in Singapore, despite expectations of struggle, showcases his skill and determination.

With the championship battle heating up, Horner remains optimistic about the upcoming races, stating, “We’re 52 points ahead with six races to go. A lot of races, a lot of points on the board, there’s a lot of racing still to happen.” However, the team knows that a swift resolution to the car’s issues is essential to maintain their lead.

In addition to the championship drama, the break provides an opportunity for Liam Lawson, recently promoted to replace Daniel Ricciardo, to acclimate to his new role within the Red Bull team. Lawson, who has shown promise as a reserve driver, now has the chance to make his mark as a potential long-term replacement for Sergio Pérez.

While the future remains uncertain for Ricciardo, whose departure has raised eyebrows, the focus now shifts to the championship contenders as they gear up for the critical final stretch of the season.
