Imran Riaz, a prominent anchorperson, was arrested at Lahore’s Airport while attempting to depart for Haj, accused in a fraud case
Imran Riaz, a well-known figure in Pakistani media, was apprehended by authorities at Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport in the early hours of Wednesday. He was preparing to travel to Saudi Arabia for the Haj pilgrimage when law enforcement officials intercepted him. The arrest, captured in viral social media footage, depicted Riaz dressed in ihram, the traditional attire worn during Haj.
The arrest was swiftly followed by Riaz being presented before Judicial Magistrate Muhammad Kamran Zafar by the Nishtar Town police. According to the First Information Report (FIR), Riaz stands accused of breaching trust under Section 406 of the Pakistan Penal Code. The allegations stem from purportedly failing to repay a substantial loan amounting to Rs0.25 billion borrowed from a complainant.

In response, Riaz’s lawyer, Mian Ashfaq, contested the charges, labelling the case against his client as fabricated. He pointed out that the complainant had affiliations with Maryam Nawaz’s political activities, suggesting a potential motive behind the accusations.
Meanwhile, legal manoeuvres unfolded concurrently in the Lahore High Court (LHC) where petitions were filed seeking details about the FIR under which Riaz was detained. His legal team argued that the arrest was conducted abruptly without providing sufficient information, claiming it was unlawful and arbitrary.
Additionally, Riaz’s brother filed a separate petition demanding his immediate release from what was described as illegal detention. This petition highlighted concerns over procedural irregularities in his apprehension and subsequent custody.
The political landscape responded swiftly to Riaz’s arrest, with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) strongly condemning the incident. PTI officials criticized the timing of the arrest, suggesting it was an attempt to undermine Riaz’s religious freedom by disrupting his Haj plans. The party labelled the arrest as a reflection of deteriorating moral values within Pakistan’s governance.
