After a brief stint in management, the football legend transitions to punditry, reuniting with Gary Neville and Roy Keane

Wayne Rooney, the celebrated former Manchester United forward, has embarked on a new chapter in his career, joining the pundit team of ‘The Overlap,’ a popular YouTube channel. This new role will see him collaborate with former teammates such as Gary Neville and Roy Keane, along with other football pundits like Jamie Carragher, Jill Scott, and Ian Wright.

The announcement was made by Fabrizio Romano via a social media video, sparking excitement among fans and followers. “Here we go! Manchester United, Everton, and England legend Wayne Rooney has signed an agreement with The Overlap,” Romano declared, signalling Rooney’s official move into the world of football commentary.

Rooney expressed his enthusiasm for this new venture on social media, stating, “I’m excited to announce that I will be joining my good mate Gary Neville and the team at The Overlap to appear on the channel across some of their brilliant shows on YouTube and the podcast. I can’t wait to get started – head over and subscribe now!”

This career pivot comes after Rooney’s managerial tenure with Birmingham, where he faced challenges leading the team. His management period concluded earlier this year following a series of disappointing results that led to his departure from the club. Before Birmingham, Rooney had managerial stints at DC United and Derby following his retirement from professional football in January 2021.

During his illustrious playing career, Rooney achieved significant success, scoring over 350 goals and securing 12 major honours, including five Premier League titles. His transition to punditry was hinted at with brief appearances on ITV and Sky Sports, covering key matches like Manchester United’s victory over Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup and Everton’s win against Liverpool in the Merseyside derby.

Rooney’s move to ‘The Overlap’ promises to bring his deep understanding of the game and firsthand experiences to a broader audience, enriching the channel’s already robust discussion and analysis lineup. His presence is expected to enhance the platform’s appeal and provide viewers with unique insights into the beautiful game
