A surprising Sunday in North Bend as zebras escape from a trailer, causing an impromptu community roundup near busy interstate

In a scene straight out of a movie, residents of North Bend, Washington, found themselves part of an unexpected zebra chase on Sunday. Four zebras, en route from Washington to Montana, made a daring escape from their trailer after their driver stopped to secure the vehicle along Interstate 90. The incident, which unfolded just 30 miles southeast of Seattle, quickly captivated the local community and passing motorists.

The escape occurred when the trailer’s door apparently came loose as the driver took an exit to adjust the security of the transport. Seizing the moment, the zebras bolted from the trailer and headed straight for the highway exit, sparking an immediate response from stunned onlookers.

Dan Barnett, a local witness, expressed his astonishment to KING-TV, noting his disbelief at seeing the zebras grazing beside the offramp. Quick-thinking drivers and locals sprang into action, creating a makeshift barrier to prevent the animals from venturing onto the busy interstate. Their efforts helped guide the zebras towards the town, away from immediate danger.

The spectacle continued as the zebras trotted past diners at a nearby restaurant, adding an unusual twist to the community’s Sunday brunch scene. The adventure didn’t stop there, as three of the zebras ended up in Whitney Blomquist’s backyard. Overwhelmed by her unexpected guests, Blomquist reached out for help in managing the peculiar situation.

With the community’s assistance, rodeo professionals were called in to corral the animals. Two of the zebras were secured in a neighboring yard, while the youngest of the group, a baby zebra, was caught later.

Trooper Rick Johnson of the Washington State Patrol shared his amazement over the incident on social media, remarking on the uniqueness of the situation for himself and his colleagues. His posts included photos of the zebras, capturing the surreal nature of the day’s events.

As of Monday, three of the four zebras were safely recovered, but the whereabouts of the fourth remained uncertain. The community and authorities continued their efforts to locate the remaining zebra, hoping to ensure a safe return to the trailer and continuation of their journey to Montana.

This unexpected zebra chase not only provided a startling spectacle for the residents of North Bend but also highlighted the importance of secure animal transport, especially when navigating public roadways.
