New ITVX series ‘The Real Crown: Inside the House of Windsor’ offers an intimate look at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding

A new documentary airing on ITVX, “The Real Crown: Inside the House of Windsor,” has shed fresh light on the internal dynamics of the British Royal Family during Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s 2018 wedding. The series, which delves into the private lives of the royals, highlights a moment of discord during the couple’s celebrated nuptials, particularly during Bishop Michael Curry’s impassioned sermon about love.

The documentary points out that while the late Queen Elizabeth II appeared moved by Bishop Curry’s message, other senior royals, including Kate Middleton and Queen Camilla, seemed less touched, sharing glances that hinted at amusement. This observation is underscored by footage showing Prince William trying to maintain composure during the sermon, which was a departure from traditional royal ceremonies.

“The Real Crown: Inside the House of Windsor” uses these moments to illustrate the challenges Harry and Meghan faced within the royal framework, which they ultimately exited in 2020. The program suggests that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s wedding was not just a union of hearts but also a symbolic attempt to modernize royal traditions. The choice of Bishop Curry, an African-American preacher known for his dynamic oratory and humanitarian efforts, was seen as a significant cultural shift intended to reflect the couple’s modern outlook.

Despite the mixed reactions within the family, the documentary emphasizes that the wedding was a global event that captured the hearts of millions around the world. However, the less-than-enthusiastic reception from some family members hinted at the underlying tensions that would later prompt Harry and Meghan to step back from their royal duties and relocate to the United States.

Since their move, the Sussexes have been vocal about their experiences with the British press and the Royal Family through various platforms, including a Netflix docu-series and Harry’s memoir, “Spare.” The couple has maintained their bond with Queen Elizabeth II, naming their daughter Lilibet in her honour, and returned to the UK for significant events like the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and her state funeral.

“The Real Crown: Inside the House of Windsor” provides a chronological exploration of significant royal events, with the episode titled “Heirs and Spares” focusing particularly on Prince Harry’s evolving role within the family. This detailed examination offers viewers a deeper understanding of the complexities and challenges that define contemporary royal life.
