Democratic Senator Nicole Mitchell was detained after being found in Detroit Lakes home

Democratic Minnesota State Senator Nicole Mitchell was arrested on suspicion of first-degree burglary after being discovered inside a home in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, according to police.

Mitchell, 49, who represents Woodbury, was found in the residence nearly four hours northwest of her district, Detroit Lakes Police Chief Steve Todd informed media outlets including CBS News and KMSP-TV.

She was booked into Becker County Jail on Monday, and held on a burglary charge pending formal charges, authorities stated.

Responding to a homeowner’s burglary report around 4:45 a.m. on Monday, police found Mitchell inside the home, Todd said. The Becker County Attorney’s Office will decide on the charges.

Property tax records indicate Mitchell’s stepmother and late father lived on the block where the alleged burglary occurred in 2022, according to the Star Tribune.

Mitchell, serving her first term, was elected in 2022. Before her political career, she worked as a TV meteorologist and served as an Air National Guard commander.

The Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party Caucus declined to comment but stated they are “aware of the situation,” CBS News reported.

Republican Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson said, “The public expects legislators to meet a high standard of conduct,” adding that consequences should match actions both legally and in her legislative role.
