A24’s latest release, “Civil War,” notches a historic box office opening, leading as North America’s top-grossing film and setting a new studio record.

“Civil War” has catapulted A24 to new heights in the cinematic landscape by amassing a remarkable $25 million USD in its opening weekend, making it the studio’s most successful debut to date. The film’s unprecedented earnings also secured it the top position at the North American box office, marking the first time an A24 movie has achieved this status.

Directed by Alex Garland, “Civil War” is set in a dystopian future America torn by division and unrest. The narrative centres on a character played by Kirsten Dunst, a journalist navigating through a dangerously fragmented United Nations to expose the truths hidden in the war-torn nation. Alongside Dunst, the film features notable performances by Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley, and Nick Offerman.

The film’s journey to the top was fueled by an overperformance across various regions, despite predictions that pegged it to garner only between $15 million USD and $20 million USD. On its opening day alone, “Civil War” drew $10.7 million USD. However, its performance in Los Angeles and El Paso, Texas, remained the only exceptions to its nationwide success.

Despite receiving a “B-” CinemaScore which suggested potential challenges in sustaining long-term audience interest, “Civil War” has defied expectations. This rating, often indicative of mixed audience reactions, did not deter the film from outshining competitors, including the highly anticipated “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” from Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment.

The production of “Civil War” was A24’s most ambitious project yet, with a budget of $50 million USD. The studio has already sold the rights to the film in various foreign markets, which aids in recouping the substantial investment. The strategic release of “Civil War,” as the only new film to hit theaters this week, further amplified its visibility and appeal among moviegoers.
