Senator Tina Smith of Minnesota firmly opposed Donald Trump‘s recent remarks on abortion, accusing the former president of misleading the public about his intentions. Speaking on ABC’s “This Week,” Smith highlighted that Trump’s shifting stance on abortion rights is a strategy to obscure his true goals.

“American women will not be deceived by Donald Trump and his inconsistent statements on abortion,” Smith declared during her interview. She pointed to the recent Arizona Supreme Court decision, which upheld a stringent 160-year-old law banning abortions unless the woman’s life is at risk. Smith attributed this legal stance directly to Trump’s influence.

Trump had stated earlier this month that the issue of abortion should be determined by individual states, rather than through federal legislation. This comment came after he avoided endorsing any specific restrictions on abortion timelines, suggesting a more decentralized approach to the matter. Despite this, when pressed about the extreme nature of the Arizona ruling, Trump deemed it excessive and expressed confidence that state authorities would address the situation.

Additionally, while announcing his position, Trump did not dismiss the possibility of endorsing a national abortion ban in the future. He also avoided discussing potential executive actions that could limit access to abortion, even in states that are traditionally supportive of reproductive rights.

In contrast, Senator Smith is actively working to ensure that abortion medications remain accessible across the United States. She is pushing for the repeal of the Comstock Act, an antiquated federal law from 1873 that prohibits the mail distribution of materials deemed “obscene,” which has been used to challenge the mailing of abortion drugs and contraceptives.

“This outdated law has been practically forgotten, yet we see it resurfacing as a tool for those appointed by Trump, and even the Supreme Court, to hinder access to medication abortions,” Smith explained. Her efforts highlight a critical battleground in the ongoing debate over reproductive rights in America, showcasing the stark contrasts between her objectives and those of Trump.
