Congress spokesperson’s Instagram post draws criticism, NCW Calls for stringent measures

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken a firm stance against Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate and party leader HS Ahir for their controversial social media posts targeting actor Kangana Ranaut, BJP‘s Lok Sabha poll candidate from Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi. In a letter addressed to the Election Commission of India (ECI), the NCW has demanded ‘strict action’ against the individuals responsible for the ‘lewd and derogatory’ remarks, emphasizing the need to uphold respect and dignity for all women.

Reacting to the incident, NCW chief Rekha Sharma condemned the conduct of Shrinate and Ahir, labelling it as ‘disgraceful’ and ‘intolerable’. Sharma underscored the significance of immediate and stringent measures against such behaviour, urging the Election Commission to intervene swiftly.

Meanwhile, Kangana Ranaut responded to Shrinate’s remarks with grace, acknowledging her as a ‘fighter and shining star’. Ranaut’s dignified response resonated with many, reflecting her resilience amidst controversy.

The controversy unfolded when an objectionable post surfaced on Shrinate’s Instagram account, targeting Ranaut in connection with her candidacy for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The post, accompanied by a picture of the actor, sought to ridicule her political aspirations by referencing market rates in Mandi, the constituency she is contesting from.

Shrinate, a former journalist, issued a clarification asserting that the post was made by someone else with access to her social media accounts. She expressed dismay over the incident and emphasized her commitment to maintaining decorum and respect in her communications.

Echoing similar sentiments, HS Ahir, another Congress leader implicated in the controversy, distanced himself from the objectionable post, attributing it to unauthorized access to his social media accounts.

While the BJP has called for accountability from the Congress party regarding the matter, the response from the grand old party and its senior leaders is awaited. As the issue unfolds, attention remains focused on ensuring accountability and integrity in political discourse, particularly in the context of electoral campaigns
