Delhi chief minister’s decision to issue directive while in custody sparks criticism

In a recent development, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly criticized Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for issuing his second executive order from the Enforcement Directorate’s custody. This move has stirred controversy, with BJP leaders accusing Kejriwal of displaying greed and insecurity by clinging to his position despite being in jail.

Speaking on the matter, BJP leader Dr Harshvardhan demanded Kejriwal’s resignation on moral grounds, emphasizing that his decision to retain the chief ministerial post while under arrest reflects his selfish motives. Dr Harshvardhan highlighted the need for Kejriwal to step down and pass on his responsibilities to someone else.

Echoing similar sentiments, BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa asserted that a chief minister should not be able to issue directives while incarcerated. He labelled the situation as a mere drama and urged the Lieutenant Governor to take strict action against such actions.

The controversy stems from Kejriwal’s recent arrest in connection with the liquor policy case. Despite his detention, Kejriwal issued directives from ED custody concerning the availability of medicines and tests at government hospitals and Mohalla Clinics. This decision has raised eyebrows and prompted scrutiny regarding the legality of such orders.

Responding to the criticism, the Delhi government’s Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj defended Kejriwal’s actions, stating that the chief minister’s primary concern is the welfare of Delhi’s residents. Bharadwaj emphasized Kejriwal’s commitment to ensuring that public health services remain uninterrupted, even in his absence.

Meanwhile, BJP leaders have initiated protests in Delhi, demanding Kejriwal’s resignation. State BJP President Virendra Sachdeva condemned Kejriwal’s alleged corruption and dishonesty, asserting that the chief minister must step down from his position. The BJP’s protests reflect growing discontentment with Kejriwal’s leadership and his decision-making while under arrest
