Vivian Balakrishnan to deliver aid in Jordan, highlighting strong Middle Eastern ties
Singapore is set to deliver its third tranche of humanitarian assistance for Gaza, emphasizing its commitment to alleviating the dire humanitarian situation in the region. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) announced that Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan will undertake a working visit to Amman, Jordan, to facilitate the aid transfer in collaboration with the Jordanian government.
This initiative sees the deployment of the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF)’s A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) and a C-130 transport aircraft, showcasing Singapore’s dedication to providing timely and effective support. The MFA highlighted that, at the invitation of the Jordanian government, the C-130 aircraft would continue to conduct humanitarian airdrop operations from Jordan, with support from the Jordanian Armed Forces.
The coordinated effort involves 69 personnel and draws on contributions from various Singaporean bodies, including the SAF, the Ministry of Health (MOH), and the non-governmental organisation Relief Singapore. The personnel embarked on their mission from Changi Air Base (East) and Paya Lebar Air Base, signifying a broad-based effort to contribute to relief operations.
Dr. Balakrishnan’s visit underscores the robust ties between Singapore and Middle Eastern partners, facilitating efficient humanitarian aid delivery to Gaza’s civilians. Accompanying him are Senior Minister of State for Defence Zaqy Mohamad and officials from the MFA.
In a gesture of appreciation, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong reached out to Jordan’s King Abdullah II, thanking the Jordanian government for its crucial role in aiding the delivery process. Lee’s letter also expressed eagerness for collaboration between the RSAF and the Royal Jordanian Air Force in conducting air drops of humanitarian supplies to Gaza.
Lee’s correspondence further reiterated Singapore’s stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, advocating for a negotiated two-state solution in line with United Nations Security Council resolutions. This position highlights Singapore’s long-standing commitment to peace and stability in the region.
As Singapore continues its humanitarian outreach, the international community is called upon to unite in support of Gaza’s civilians, striving towards a resolution that ensures a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace.
