Tragic accident on U.S. 24 leaves community reeling from loss

A devastating collision in Illinois has resulted in the loss of five lives, including three young children, following a tragic accident involving a school bus and a semi-truck. The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. on Monday when a school bus carrying three preschoolers collided with a semi-truck transporting sand on U.S. 24 near Parkview Road. Both vehicles erupted in flames upon impact, leading to a catastrophic outcome.

The victims of this heartbreaking accident have been identified as David Coufal, 72, from Browning; Angela Spiker, 57, from Rushville; Maria Miller, 5, from Rushville; Andrew Miller, 3, from Rushville, and Noah Driscoll, a 3-year-old child from Rushville. This tragic loss has deeply affected the community, prompting an outpouring of support and condolences from across the region.

Schuyler-Industry Schools, deeply saddened by the loss of both staff and students, announced the incident on their Facebook page, expressing their sympathies to the families and community members affected. In response to this tragedy, the district has decided to suspend classes for Tuesday and Wednesday, providing counseling and support services to students and staff during this difficult time.

County sheriff Bill Redshaw expressed the profound impact of the loss on the tight-knit community of Schuyler County, describing it as devastating and tragic. As investigations continue to determine the cause of the collision, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has initiated a safety investigation in coordination with the Illinois State Police.

The road where the accident occurred was closed for several hours as authorities worked tirelessly to assess the situation and provide assistance to those affected by this heartbreaking incident.
