Molly Harbron, 25, defies odds after leg amputation, showcasing resilience and humor on wedding day

Molly Harbron, a 25-year-old carer, faced a life-changing ordeal when doctors had to amputate her leg due to complications from a blood clot during the pandemic lockdown. Despite the challenges, Molly was determined to stand tall in her wedding dress as she exchanged vows with her husband Daniel, 25, last August. With a prosthetic leg and a wheelchair, Molly walked down the aisle, showcasing a darkly funny tattoo on her right leg, reading: “They’ll pinch owt these days,” with an arrow pointing to her prosthetic.

The journey to this momentous day was fraught with difficulties. Molly initially visited Dewsbury and District Hospital’s A&E department in April 2020, complaining of symptoms related to diabetic ketoacidosis. However, delays in treatment led to complications, including suspected deep vein thrombosis and reduced blood flow to her left leg. Despite medical interventions, surgeons were unable to save Molly’s leg, necessitating both below and above-the-knee amputations.
Reflecting on the traumatic experience, Molly described waking up to the realization that her leg was gone, feeling alone amidst lockdown restrictions. Yet, she managed to find humor even in the darkest moments, joking with her surgeon before the operation about not wanting to lose height. The surgeon’s response became a poignant memory, highlighting Molly’s resilience in the face of adversity.
Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust, responsible for the hospital where Molly was treated, later admitted to breaching duty and issued an apology. Acknowledging the consequences of their actions, the Trust conceded that timely surgery could have prevented the need for amputations.
Despite the challenges and setbacks, Molly’s wedding day became a testament to her strength, determination, and irrepressible spirit. Walking down the aisle, adorned with a humorous tattoo on her prosthetic leg, Molly exemplified resilience and courage, inspiring others with her journey of overcoming adversity.
