The Tameside Community Mourns the Untimely Death of a Playful Youngster

The Tameside community is in mourning after the sudden and tragic passing of Jeffrey Ekpechue, a “cheeky and mischievous” five-year-old with Down’s syndrome. Discovered unresponsive at his home in Tameside, Greater Manchester, by his father Michael on January 7, Jeffrey was later pronounced dead at Tameside Hospital.

Jeffrey, affectionately known as Jeff, attended Manchester Road Academy Primary School and was described by his father as a happy, playful, and mischievous little boy. Despite being born with Down’s syndrome and complex health needs, Jeffrey’s personality shone through. His father, Michael, recounted the heartbreaking moments leading up to the discovery, stating, “When I went to check on him, I realized his whole body was cold, and he had not moved from his sleeping position.”

Michael attempted to revive Jeffrey with mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, but despite his efforts, the young boy tragically passed away in the hospital. Michael shared, “Jeffrey was a happy, playful, and mischievous little boy – with a smile so big it would light up any room. Despite being born with Down’s syndrome and complex health needs – and very little speech – his personality would shine through.”

Jeffrey, the youngest of two siblings, is survived by his older sister Victoria, seven. Describing their close bond, Michael revealed, “Jeffrey and his sister were inseparable. He would copy everything she taught him – cartwheels, flips, and splits. One of Jeff’s favourite games was playing hide and seek with his sister.”

The grieving father continued, “Like every other kid his age, he loved it when you sang his nursery rhymes to him, especially ‘head, shoulders, knees and toes’. He would do the actions repeatedly.” Michael emphasized Jeffrey’s infectious laughter, stating, “His laughter was the light of our home. We will forever miss him.”

In memory of Jeffrey Ekpechue, a GoFundMe page has been set up to assist with the funeral expenses. An inquest into his death is scheduled to be held in the coming months, as the community comes together to support the grieving family during this difficult time.
