Crowds rejoice as Queen Margrethe II abdicates in favor of her son

In a historic moment for Denmark, King Frederik X ascends to the throne following the voluntary abdication of his mother, Queen Margrethe II, signifying a significant shift in the nation’s monarchy. The grand ceremony, held at Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen, witnessed a balcony kiss between the new King and his Australian-born wife, Queen Mary, delighting the massive crowds gathered to celebrate.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen officially proclaimed King Frederik X from the palace balcony, adhering to the tradition of repeating the proclamation three times. The atmosphere was festive as the King, adorned in ceremonial military attire, stood beside the Prime Minister.

Joined by Queen Mary and their four children on the balcony, the new royal family engaged with the crowds, sparking spontaneous renditions of the national anthem. The joyful occasion marked Denmark’s first royal succession in over half a century that wasn’t prompted by the death of a monarch.

King Frederik X expressed his aspirations as a unifying king for the future, emphasizing his approach to this task throughout his life. The King, visibly moved by the occasion, thanked the crowd with a heartfelt gesture, placing both hands on his heart. His royal motto, “United, committed, for the kingdom of Denmark,” sets the tone for his reign, as he aims to return the trust placed in him.

King Frederik X and Queen Mary departed from Christiansborg Palace in a horse-drawn coach, greeted by church bells and the cheers of the people. The abdication of Queen Margrethe II, the first Danish monarch to voluntarily relinquish the throne in nearly 900 years, leaves Denmark with two queens, as she retains her title.

The unexpected abdication announcement on New Year’s Eve, citing health issues, shocked the nation, challenging the expectation of Queen Margrethe II living out her days on the throne. The abdication document was presented to the Queen during a meeting with the Danish Cabinet at Christiansborg Palace, and she gracefully gestured to King Frederik X to take her place.

The royal guards’ music band marked the occasion with a special parade, wearing red jackets instead of their usual black. The festivities extended beyond Denmark, with Australians joining the celebration of their compatriot becoming queen. The historical transition not only embraces a new era for the Danish monarchy but also reflects the diverse background of Queen Mary.

As Denmark welcomes King Frederik X to the throne, the nation anticipates the impact of his reign, marked by unity, commitment, and a dedication to the kingdom.
