Paula Abdul has taken a bold step, filing a lawsuit against Nigel Lythgoe, her former co-judge from ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ and an executive producer of ‘American Idol,’ alleging instances of sexual assault and verbal abuse. This explosive claim, filed in Los Angeles, has stirred a buzz in entertainment circles.
According to documents obtained by The Blast, the 61-year-old singer accused the 74-year-old TV personality of multiple instances of sexual assault and demeaning behavior. Abdul, known for hits like ‘Opposites Attract,’ revealed that her encounter with Lythgoe began in 2001 when FOX approached her to judge ‘Pop Idol,’ a show in which Lythgoe was involved.
In the court documents, Abdul detailed an incident where Lythgoe allegedly insulted and belittled her during a meeting related to the show. This encounter left her with serious reservations about participating, despite others considering her a perfect fit. The singer and her team hoped it was an isolated incident.
The lawsuit claims that the first instance of assault occurred during the early seasons of ‘American Idol,’ while they were on the road for auditions. Abdul described an unsettling incident in a hotel elevator where Lythgoe allegedly assaulted her physically and verbally. Shocked and disturbed, Abdul immediately informed her representatives.
Another alleged incident took place during a dinner at Lythgoe’s house after Abdul had signed on as a judge for ‘So You Think You Can Dance.’ She claimed Lythgoe attempted to force himself on her and make unwanted advances, which she firmly rejected.
Abdul, fearing repercussions on her career, chose to remain silent about these incidents. Shockingly, she also alleged witnessing Lythgoe assault one of her assistants.
The lawsuit not only targets Lythgoe but also 19 Entertainment and Fremantle Media North America. Abdul claimed discrimination in compensation and benefits compared to her male counterparts on ‘American Idol.’ She described enduring constant mistreatment, bullying, and harassment from Lythgoe and others associated with the show.
Paula Abdul’s successful career began as a choreographer when she was discovered by The Jacksons. Her debut album, ‘Forever Your Girl,’ in 1988 skyrocketed her music career. She was previously married to Emilio Estevez and later to Brad Beckerman.
Nigel Lythgoe, known for his early success in television after a performing career, was married to Bonita Shawe and has two children with her.
Abdul’s decision to bring the lawsuit comes under the California Sexual Abuse and Cover-Up Accountability Act, allowing survivors a window to file claims for incidents after January 1, 2009, until December 31, 2026.
The allegations against a prominent figure like Lythgoe have sparked widespread attention, raising crucial discussions about workplace conduct and the treatment of women in the entertainment industry.
