Liverpool-born United fan Shea Lacey scored within eight minutes of his first senior start, becoming the club’s first teenager since Marcus Rashford to achieve the feat

Manchester United’s night ended in another Old Trafford horror show, but amid the boos and a dramatic Carabao Cup collapse, one teenager gave supporters something very different to talk about.

Shea Lacey needed just eight minutes of his first senior start to score his first competitive goal for Manchester United.

The 19-year-old received the ball on the right side of Brighton’s box, shifted onto his favoured left foot and fired beyond Jason Steele to put United ahead.

Mason Mount made it 2-0 less than two minutes later, only for Brighton to turn the tie completely around and win 3-2, handing United their first home defeat from two goals ahead in 50 years. 

But Lacey had already made his mark.

The Liverpool-born winger became the first teenager to score on his first Manchester United start since Marcus Rashford did it against Midtjylland in February 2016. 

So who exactly is Shea Lacey, why is a boy from a Liverpool football family playing for Manchester United, and where did the nickname “Scouse Messi” come from?

Who is Shea Lacey?

Shea Lacey is a 19-year-old Manchester United winger, born in Liverpool on 14 April 2007.

Manchester United describe him as a left-footed, Liverpool-born forward who has represented England at youth level. He came through the club’s academy before making his senior debut in December 2025. 

He is most comfortable attacking from the right, which allows him to move inside onto his stronger left foot, although he can also play through the middle or from the opposite flank.

His close control, low centre of gravity and willingness to take defenders on have attracted attention since long before his first-team breakthrough.

They also explain the nickname that has followed him through the academy.

Why is Shea Lacey called the ‘Scouse Messi’?

Lacey’s Liverpool roots combined with his playing style have led to the “Scouse Messi” nickname.

He told GOAL that Shea’s movement and the way he receives the ball remind him more of Phil Foden. 

That is probably a more sensible football comparison than expecting any teenager to become the next Lionel Messi.

Why does a Liverpool-born player support Manchester United?

This is one of the more unusual parts of Lacey’s story.

He was born in Liverpool and comes from a football family with strong links to the city.

His father spent time in Liverpool’s academy, while his older brother Paddy Lacey also came through Liverpool’s system before going on to play professionally.

His other brother, Luis Lacey, spent time in Manchester United’s academy and later played elsewhere in senior football. 

Shea himself trained with several clubs when he was young, including Liverpool, Everton, Blackburn and Manchester City.

His father ultimately chose Manchester United because he believed the club offered the best environment for Shea’s development and technical ability. 

Lacey subsequently grew into a Manchester United supporter despite the loyalties around him.

What position does Shea Lacey play?

Lacey is primarily a right winger, although he is capable of playing across the attacking midfield positions.

Manchester United describe him simply as a left-footed winger, while Transfermarkt lists right wing as his main role with attacking midfield and left wing as secondary positions. 

Playing on the right allows him to attack defenders before moving onto his left foot.

That is exactly what he did for his first competitive senior goal against Brighton.

After receiving Youri Tielemans’ pass, Lacey shifted inside and drilled his finish beyond Steele in the eighth minute. The Guardian described the goal as the teenager decorating his first start with a superb finish. 

When did Shea Lacey actually make his Man Utd debut?

This is an important distinction.

Brighton was Lacey’s first Manchester United start, not his senior debut.

He had already made his competitive first-team debut on 21 December 2025, coming off the bench against Aston Villa.

That appearance made him the 256th different Manchester United academy graduate to represent the first team, according to the club’s academy records. 

He subsequently received more senior minutes before finally being handed his first start against Brighton on 16 September 2026.

That is why reports describing the Brighton match as his “debut” can be misleading.

It was his full debut, or first start, and the first time he scored competitively for the senior side.

Why was Lacey’s Brighton goal such a big moment?

Scoring after eight minutes would have been significant enough.

The history attached to it made the moment even bigger.

Lacey became the first Manchester United teenager since Marcus Rashford in 2016 to score on his first senior start. 

Rashford famously scored twice against Midtjylland on his first start before going on to establish himself in United’s senior side.

Lacey’s goal does not guarantee the same career path, but it puts him alongside one of the academy’s most notable modern breakthroughs.

It was also a moment of redemption against Brighton.

Lacey had been sent off against the same opposition in an FA Cup tie earlier in 2026 after receiving a second yellow card for dissent.

Ability has rarely been the main concern around Lacey.

Availability has.

His development has been interrupted by injuries during important stages of his academy career.

BBC Sport reported that he endured a lengthy spell out with a thigh problem during the 2023/24 campaign and later missed another period with a calf injury in early 2026. 

Those setbacks mattered because they arrived at an age when other academy players were building match experience and physically developing.

United have therefore managed his workload carefully.

By April 2026, Under-21 coach Adam Lawrence said Lacey was showing greater maturity and benefiting from regularly training around the first-team programme. 

His first-start goal against Brighton suggests those patient steps have finally brought him much closer to the senior side.

Has Shea Lacey played for England?

Yes.

Lacey has represented England at youth level, including the Under-20s.

He was also given an unusual glimpse of the senior international environment in October 2025 when Thomas Tuchel invited him to train with England’s senior squad while Lacey was part of the Under-20 setup. 

England Under-20 coach Ben Futcher said at the time that exposing young players to the senior environment allowed them to see the standard they needed to reach.

For Lacey, it came before he had even established himself as a Manchester United first-team player.

His older brothers are Paddy and Luis Lacey.

Paddy was part of Liverpool’s youth system and later played professionally before moving into boxing, while Luis spent time in Manchester United’s academy.

The Guardian noted the contrast during the Brighton match, with Gabriel having previously been earmarked for possible involvement in the same fixture. 

Lacey’s goal does not make Gabriel’s situation irrelevant, and the two players are at different stages of their development.

But the events have put Manchester United’s academy pathway firmly back under the spotlight.

What happens next for Shea Lacey?

One first-start goal does not guarantee a regular place in Michael Carrick’s team.

But Lacey has now done something every academy player is asked to do when an opportunity arrives: make himself difficult to ignore.

Manchester United are under pressure after a poor start to the season, and their 3-2 defeat to Brighton only increased the scrutiny on Carrick. Reuters notes that United have won only once in their opening four Premier League games and have now suffered another early domestic cup exit.

Lacey’s situation is different.

On a night when United threw away a two-goal lead and Old Trafford ended in boos, their 19-year-old academy graduate walked away having scored his first competitive senior goal eight minutes into his first start.

The next question is no longer whether supporters know the name, Shea Lacey.

It is how often they will see it on Manchester United’s team sheet.
