PSG survives Bayern’s fightback in record-breaking 5-4 Champions League semifinal thriller

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) managed to hold on to a 5-4 victory over Bayern Munich in an extraordinary first leg of their Champions League semifinal at the Parc des Princes, setting a new record for the highest-scoring match at this stage of the competition.

The match was a goal-laden spectacle, with both teams showcasing devastating attacking prowess and producing thrilling moments throughout the 2-hour and 20-minute encounter. Bayern’s Harry Kane opened the scoring with a penalty in the 17th minute after PSG’s Willian Pacho fouled Luis Diaz. But PSG responded quickly, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scoring a stunning equaliser just moments later before Joao Neves’s header put PSG ahead at 2-1 in the 33rd minute.

Bayern were relentless in their pursuit of an equaliser and found it in the form of Michael Olise, who struck a powerful goal to make it 2-2. But PSG was back ahead on the brink of halftime, when Ousmane Dembele scored a penalty, awarded after a VAR review when Bayern’s Alphonso Davies handled the ball inside the box.

Despite PSG’s 3-2 lead at halftime, Bayern’s fightback was far from over. The second half saw more action, with Kvaratskhelia adding to his brilliant performance by completing his brace, making it 4-2 after 56 minutes. Dembele then sealed his own double, scoring a near-post strike to stretch PSG’s lead to 5-2.

Bayern refused to give up, however. Dayot Upamecano headed in a free-kick from Joshua Kimmich, the German side back into the tie. The drama continued in the dying moments as entity[“athlete”,” Luis Diaz”, “Colombian footballer”] scored for Bayern to make it 5-4, leaving the tie finely poised ahead of the second leg at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern’s manager, Vincent Kompany, watched the match from the stands after being suspended, but would have been pleased with his team’s resilience despite their setbacks. Kane, who had scored the opener, praised Bayern’s fighting spirit, saying, “It shows the character of our team. It has happened to us this season where we have come back from being down, and it is good to know we can do it at the highest level as well.”

For PSG, the victory comes as a significant boost, not just for the scoreline but also for their confidence going into the second leg. PSG have been one of the most dominant teams in European football, and with this result, they will head to Munich with a one-goal advantage and a place in the final in Budapest on May 30 within their sights.

The match also served as a testament to the attacking brilliance of both teams, with a staggering 9 goals scored and the highest-scoring Champions League semifinal match ever recorded. As the second leg approaches, both clubs will look to their star players to make the difference in a tie that has already proved to be one of the most exciting and unpredictable in recent memory.

With everything still to play for, fans will be eagerly awaiting the rematch in Munich, where Bayern will hope to overcome the deficit and make their first final appearance since 2020.
