Last-minute trip following the passing of Kuwait’s ruling Emir, Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Sabah

Prince William embarks on an unexpected overseas journey to Kuwait, representing King Charles, to offer condolences following the recent demise of Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Sabah, the ruling Emir of Kuwait. Sheikh Nawaf, 86, passed away over the weekend, having assumed the role of Emir in 2020 after the death of his predecessor, Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah.

The Duke of Cambridge is slated to convey King Charles’s sympathies and support to the late Emir’s family. Additionally, during his visit, Prince William is expected to meet with Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the newly appointed Emir and half-brother of the former leader.

Accompanying Prince William on this diplomatic mission is the Prince of Wales, emphasizing the significance of the bilateral relationship between the UK and Kuwait. Foreign Secretary Lord David Cameron is also part of the delegation. Notably, other royals from around the world, including King Felipe of Spain and King Abdullah of Jordan, have either already paid their respects or are en route to Kuwait.

The unexpected overseas journey comes after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak expressed his condolences, describing Sheikh Nawaf as a “great friend” to the UK. In his statement, Sunak acknowledged the late Emir’s significant contributions to bilateral relations and regional stability. Sheikh Nawaf had previously undergone medical checks in the United States in March 2021, and his recent hospitalization heightened concerns about his health in Kuwait.

The passing of Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Sabah marks a pivotal moment for Kuwait, with his leadership being a stabilizing force in the region. The depth of emotion surrounding his loss reflects the profound impact of his diplomatic efforts and peacemaking during his tenure.
