Lancashire mourns the loss of assistant chief constable Peter Lawson

In a sudden and tragic turn of events, Assistant Chief Constable Peter Lawson, the key figure in the search for missing mum Nicola Bulley, passed away at his home on Sunday. Lancashire Police has now confirmed the cause of his death.

Initially reported as a medical-related death, Lancashire Police referred the case to the coroner. Today, the force confirmed that the coroner established Lawson died of natural causes, stating that “there is no requirement” for an inquest.

The official statement from the constabulary reads: “Following the tragic death of Assistant Chief Constable Peter Lawson at the weekend, His Majesty’s senior coroner for Lancashire and Blackburn with Darwen has reviewed the circumstances. It has now been established that Peter died from natural causes, and funeral arrangements will be made in due course.”

The statement further extended condolences to Lawson’s family and emphasized the need for privacy. Lancashire Police pledged ongoing support to the family and colleagues, expressing sorrow for the loss of an “outstanding officer who served the communities of Lancashire with pride.”

Peter Lawson played a pivotal role in the high-profile search for Nicola Bulley, the 45-year-old mother who tragically lost her life. Lawson, described as an “admired” officer, began his career in Preston and served across the county in various roles.

The search for Bulley, who went missing after dropping her daughters at school in St Michael’s on Wyre, Lancashire, garnered attention and criticism. Her body was found in the River Wyre on February 19, about one mile from where she vanished on January 27. Lancashire Police faced scrutiny for the handling of the investigation and the disclosure of Bulley’s personal information.

Lawson’s sudden death has left the police force and the wider community in shock. Lancashire’s Chief Constable Chris Rowley expressed deep sadness, stating, “Pete’s death will come as a shock to the entire force and the wider police family across the country.” Tributes poured in for Lawson, highlighting his dedication and service to Lancashire.

As the community mourns the loss of a respected officer, questions may arise about the impact on the ongoing investigation into Nicola Bulley’s case. The sudden passing of Assistant Chief Constable Peter Lawson leaves a void in the force and raises concerns about the challenges ahead.

The circumstances surrounding Lawson’s death add another layer to an already tragic chapter in Lancashire’s recent history, underscoring the complexities faced by law enforcement in their pursuit of justice.
