New York city medical examiner identifies Aon risk services executive as 1,650th 9/11 victim

 In a significant breakthrough, the New York City medical examiner’s office has identified another victim of the 9/11 terror attacks, bringing closure to a 23-year-old mystery. The victim is confirmed to be John Ballantine Niven, a 44-year-old executive at Aon Risk Services, an insurance firm located on the 105th floor of tower two of the World Trade Center complex.

John Ballantine Niven’s identity was confirmed through advanced DNA analysis conducted by the medical examiner’s office. Niven, a father to an 18-month-old son at the time of the attacks, worked on the 105th floor of tower two. He and his family split their time between Manhattan and Oyster Bay, where he grew up.

Gratitude and Emotional Response

Ellen Niven, John’s wife, expressed gratitude for the “extraordinary efforts” of city officials in their ongoing task of identifying victims’ remains. In an email, she shared the emotional impact of the news, stating, “It is certainly emotional for me, and I’m sure many others, to hear many years later that DNA has been found.” She acknowledged the dedication of the teams working behind the scenes to honor the commitment of “Never Forget.”

1,650th Victim Identified

John Ballantine Niven’s identification marks the 1,650th victim to be identified from the 9/11 attacks, which claimed the lives of 2,753 people. The attacks, orchestrated by hijackers who crashed airplanes into the Twin Towers, left an indelible mark on American history.

Mayor’s Statement on New Identifications

New York City Mayor Eric Adams acknowledged the ongoing work of the Office of Chief Medical Examiner, emphasizing that while the pain from the losses on September 11th never fades, new identifications offer solace to the families of victims.
