The Crown and Cushion pub in Biddulph faced public outrage after allegedly enforcing a rule that prohibited 19-year-old Kayce Jackson, diagnosed with SWAN syndrome (Syndromes Without a Name), from entering the establishment without a parent or guardian.

Kayce, who had celebrated her 18th birthday at the pub, visited The Crown and Cushion earlier this month to greet friends. According to her mother, Krystle Jackson, Kayce was in tears when informed that she could no longer enter the pub independently.

Krystle expressed her frustration, stating that her daughter was trying to gain independence, and this incident was a setback to her efforts. Kayce, although childlike for her age due to her genetic condition, was not causing any issues during her brief visit, according to her mother.

The controversy gained attention when a now-deleted post on social media indicated that over-18s were required to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The pub mentioned receiving complaints from regulars about unaccompanied individuals over 18 and children. The post emphasized that the pub is not a creche but did not specify the nature of the complaints.

Following the public outcry, The Crown and Cushion clarified its stance, stating that no adult over the age of 18 needs to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. An employee mentioned that the pub welcomes individuals aged 18 and over for drinks without adult supervision.

The incident has sparked a conversation about inclusivity and understanding the needs of individuals with disabilities. The pub’s initial decision to implement a restrictive rule has drawn criticism, prompting a revision to ensure a more inclusive environment for all patrons.
