Sisay Lemma and Hellen Obiri triumph at the 2024 Boston Marathon

Record-breaking performances define the 128th edition of the iconic Boston Marathon, with top honours in multiple divisions

Ethiopian runner Sisay Lemma clinched a spectacular victory at the 2024 Boston Marathon, crossing the finish line with an impressive time of 2:06:17. His performance, characterized by a strong finish, marked a significant achievement in the men’s professional division. Close on his heels, fellow Ethiopian Mohamed Esa secured second place with a time of 2:06:58, followed by Kenyan runner Evans Chebet, who finished the race in 2:07:22.

In the women’s professional division, Kenya’s Hellen Obiri defended her title, winning for the second consecutive year. She completed the race in 2:22:37, narrowly ahead of her compatriot Sharon Lokedi, who finished just eight seconds later. Another Kenyan, Edna Kiplagat, rounded out the top three with a time of 2:23:21.

The wheelchair divisions also witnessed record-setting performances. Marcel Hug from Switzerland set what could be a new course record in the men’s wheelchair division, finishing in an astounding 1:15:33. This victory marked his seventh win at Boston. In the women’s wheelchair division, Eden Rainbow-Cooper of the United Kingdom emerged victorious with a time of 1:35:11.

Moreover, the handcycle divisions saw strong performances from American athletes. Zachary Stinson led the men’s handcycle division, completing the course in 1:04:46. In the women’s division, Alicia Dana showcased her prowess by finishing in 1:15:20.

Para athletes also shone brightly in this year’s marathon, with standout performances across various categories. Marko Cheseto Lemtukei from the United States led the men’s para T62/T64/T42/T44 division, completing the race in 2:46:45.

This year’s marathon not only highlighted the physical and mental endurance of the participants but also celebrated the spirit of international competition with athletes from over 100 countries participating. The city of Boston once again proved to be a splendid host for one of the most prestigious events in the global running calendar, demonstrating the unyielding human spirit and the joy of sport
