Despite Mulligan’s stellar record, “Spaceman” struggles to impress on rotten tomatoes, ending an 11-year success streak

Adam Sandler’s new Netflix movie, “Spaceman,” has not been warmly received by critics, marking a notable dip in the impressive career trajectory of co-star Carey Mulligan. This sci-fi film’s lukewarm reception contrasts sharply with Mulligan’s usually acclaimed performances, positioning “Spaceman” as her first “Rotten” film since 2013’s “The Great Gatsby.”

Despite the general scepticism of critics, Adam Sandler’s unique charm in films, often categorized as “so bad they’re good,” continues to endear him to a wide audience. His comedies, including “Big Daddy” and “Grown Ups,” have historically performed poorly on Rotten Tomatoes but still enjoy a loyal fanbase. “Spaceman” has garnered a 59% score, which, interestingly, is somewhat of an achievement for Sandler, given the track record of his previous projects.

Carey Mulligan, a beacon of talent in the film industry, boasts three Academy Award nominations and four Golden Globe nods, reflecting her prowess in both supporting and leading roles. Her portfolio, filled with critically lauded films like “Drive” and “Promising Young Woman,” highlights her discerning choice in roles. However, “Spaceman” now stands as a rare blip on her otherwise stellar Rotten Tomatoes record, with a disappointing score that places it among her lowest-rated projects.

Despite the setback, “Spaceman” maintains a strong presence on Netflix, mirroring the trend of the platform’s most-watched movies not necessarily aligning with critical acclaim. The film’s ranking as #3 on Netflix’s global chart underscores the platform’s ability to draw attention to a wide range of content, regardless of critical reception.

Throughout her career, Mulligan has selectively navigated through roles, often opting for characters in Oscar-worthy dramas over potential blockbuster leads. This strategy has largely shielded her from critical flops, with only four films receiving “Rotten” scores on Rotten Tomatoes. This meticulous selection process underscores Mulligan’s commitment to quality and her exceptional ability to resonate with audiences and critics alike.

“Spaceman” may have ended Mulligan’s 11-year streak of critical success, but it’s unlikely to tarnish her reputation as one of the film industry’s most respected actors. As Netflix continues to champion a diverse array of content, “Spaceman” finds its place among the platform’s eclectic mix, serving as a testament to Mulligan’s adventurous spirit in role selection.
