Operation Avalite will investigate recent incidents, including a Melbourne synagogue arson, to tackle rising anti-semitic acts

In response to a series of alarming anti-Semitic incidents, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced the creation of a national task force aimed at combating anti-Semitism. The new initiative, named Operation Avalite, will be backed by the Commonwealth and is set to investigate recent acts of hate, including an arson attack on a synagogue in Melbourne.

The decision to establish Operation Avalite comes amid growing concerns over anti-Semitic sentiments and actions in Australia, with the Prime Minister emphasising the need for a swift, coordinated response to protect the Jewish community. Albanese expressed his commitment to ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable and that the Jewish community feels safe and supported across the nation.

“Anti-Semitism has no place in Australia, and we will not stand idly by while these hate-fuelled acts take place,” said Albanese during the announcement. The task force will work closely with law enforcement and Jewish community organisations to investigate the incidents, increase security around Jewish institutions, and implement educational measures to tackle anti-Semitic rhetoric.

The recent arson attack on the synagogue in Melbourne, along with several other disturbing incidents targeting Jewish Australians, has sparked widespread concern. In addition to immediate law enforcement efforts, the task force will also explore long-term strategies for combating hate speech and ensuring that Australian society is more inclusive and tolerant.

Albanese’s government has faced increased pressure to take a firm stance against anti-Semitism, especially as incidents have risen in the wake of global tensions. The creation of Operation Avalite marks a significant step in the government’s ongoing efforts to address hate crimes and protect vulnerable communities.
