Unique moment as judge references Eminem’s famous song during sentencing
Embed from Getty ImagesIn a surprising twist during a sentencing hearing, a judge who once presided over Eminem’s case seized a memorable moment to reference the rapper’s iconic song, “The Real Slim Shady.”
Rewinding to June 2001, when Eminem, facing a weapons charge related to a feud with Detroit rap group Insane Clown Posse, received a one-year probation sentence. The rapper, accused of brandishing a 9mm semiautomatic gun during a confrontation, narrowly avoided a potential five-year prison term.
Circuit Judge Denise Langford Morris didn’t mince words during the sentencing, telling Eminem, “Poor judgment is an understatement for what you did. You are extremely lucky, sir, that no one was injured or killed.”
Despite Eminem’s no contest plea to charges of carrying a concealed weapon and brandishing a weapon, defense attorney Wally Piszczatowski expressed satisfaction with what he deemed a “fair sentence.” Piszczatowski highlighted Eminem’s contentment with being treated like any other citizen, avoiding preferential treatment due to his celebrity status.
Prosecutor Mark Bilkovic, however, had sought jail time for the rapper, emphasizing the judge’s authority in monitoring Eminem’s behavior throughout the probation period.
The courtroom took an unexpected turn when, channeling Eminem’s hit song, the judge playfully remarked, “Mr. Mathers. Now is the time for you to please stand up.” A clever nod to “The Real Slim Shady” that added a touch of humor to the serious legal proceedings.
Eminem, known for his quick wit and sharp lyrics, responded with a simple, “No, ma’am,” barely uttering a word during the sentencing.
As the courtroom history books capture this unique intersection of pop culture and law, Eminem left the legal arena with a one-year probation term, over $2,300 in fines and fees, and a directive to contribute to community service.
